Truth Behind Proteins and Vitamins In Cosmetic Products

Proteins are added to different care products because they act as emulsifiers, antistatic agents, film formners, thickeners and humectants. But they have no biological significance. Proteins cannot be absorbed by hair, skin or nails and they cannot repair our body tissues.

Vitamins are also important nutrients in our diet to maintain health. Vitamins has been added to cosmetics and toiletries to nourish our skin, hair and nails. Vitamin A, C, and E are commmonly used with vitamin B added. They have anitoxidants. Vitamin C reacts with oxygen and is often used as an antioxidants in food products. It can prevent oxidation of cosmetics. It is water soluable and cannot be absorbed through the skin. Vitamin A and E are oil-soluble vitamins, which can react with free radicals. Cosmetic manufacturers have latched onto these facts and make exagerated claims that these vitamins will slow down the onset of fine lines and wrinkles. These vitamins can only penetrate into the first few layers of the epidermis, and never reach the dermis where the aging process takes place. The reduction of fine lines and wrinkles is entirely because of the moisturizing effect of the other ingredients in the formulation.
